Final Fantasy VI Four Character Challenge

#1

Post by Marilink » Sun Jan 06, 2019 1:41 pm

Hey guys! Remember the FFV Four Job Fiesta? Cool! Now remember the Chrono Trigger Holiday Challenge? Great!

This is neither of those!

But it is run by the same guy (Eric Koziol, AKA RevenantKioku), this time with Final Fantasy VI! The rules are simple: You only get four characters, and you cannot equip Espers. You may only use the natural abilities of your character.

Terra and Celes learn magic without espers, so you can treat their magic whichever way you want—ban it with the rest of magic, or make exceptions for them because they learn it without espers.

Who’s in? I’m in! The deadline is March 21. Info is at http://fourjobfiesta.com/ff6fcc/ . Official registration is, once again, done via Twitter.

Tagging the usual suspects: @Valigarmander @smol Kat @ScottyMcGee @Random User @I REALLY HATE POKEMON!

I'm assuming Lore qualifies for the no magic run? Or is it just "Magic", not magic?

Also not sure how I feel about Umaro.

Just "Magic." You can use a character's natural abilities, which would cover Lore.

I guess I'm not too worried then. I'll just have to be patient enough to find some decent Lore.

Apart from Sabin, these are all characters I don't use too often (if at all). This is going to be an interesting run.

Made it up to the defense of Narshe. Nothing out of the ordinary so far, but this is where the game will open up a little and allow me to build my own party. The site says to "use your assigned characters when you can", but it doesn't say whether or not you can fill the empty spots in your party with non-assigned characters. For my run I'm going to opt not to, and if I enter a story segment where I'm required to use non-assigned characters I'll just kill them off and not use them. It'll make things a little more challenging, but that's part of the fun I think. And on the other hand, it'll make grinding a lot easier since experience will be divided among fewer people.

Sabin is going to be carrying me for a while. Fire Dance can obliterate almost any enemy at this point, especially if I have Earrings equipped. I'm sticking him in the back row, since rows don't affect damage dealt by Blitzes. Locke can't do anything except attack, steal, and use items, so that's exactly what I'll have him do. I'll sit him in the back row with a Genji Glove and two Full Moons, and have him attack when he's not stealing or using support items. The game is about to get interesting.

YES ME HI IM IN

Per usual I will not be registering on Twitter so I'm not an official runner but THAT'S OK BECAUSE I'M SLOW SO WHO KNOWS IF I'LL FINISH ANYWAY 8) 8)

I've opted to randomize my party via THE LIST in absence of using Gilgabot so for added Super Happy Fun Time NOT ONLY will I be required to use the top four character rolls, but when I don't have access to them, I have to go down the list (in theory; this probably won't actually do anything in practice but I'll give it a go anyway). My seed is here.

1. Strago (haha rip) 2. Setzer 3. Cyan (H E C K) 4. Shadow (WELL THEN... time for 16BitHusbandoContent)

Incidentally, how should multi-party situations be handled?

Do your best. Your 4 characters will probably be the most highly leveled, so you might do well to spread them out across the multiple parties.

Love the idea of THE LIST as a backup plan, Kat. I'll try to do that as well. Here's mine, subtracting my 4 characters:

Terra
Setzer
Celes
Edgar
Shadow
Strago
Relm
Gogo
Cyan
Umaro

I probably won't go out of my way to get Gogo or Umaro, for what it's worth.

THE LIST sounds like a cool option. Personally I think I'm going to stick to using my four characters and only them (apart from the short stretch in the WoR when I'll only have Celes).

So far my run has been going pretty well, despite having only two characters and no access to magic or Espers. My strategy with Sabin has been to use Aura Bolt (or occasionally, Suplex) for single targets and Fire Dance for groups. With a Hero Ring and an Earring equipped, every regular enemy goes down in only one or two hits. Poor Locke hasn't had much to do but clean up Sabin's leftovers.

Zozo went better than I thought it would. Sabin's Blitzes cut through the enemies with ease, and Dadaluma went down in only a few hits. Ultros was an even bigger joke, being defeated by two Fire Dances. The enemies in the Magitek Research Facility forced me to play a little more defensively (and gave Locke something to do other than attack), but weren't too much to handle.

The fight with Ifrit and Shiva was the trickiest one I've had since Kefka. I couldn't even scratch Ifrit; all I could do was hit him fruitlessly and use Potions to recover from his counterattacks until Shiva appeared, at which point two Fire Dances ended the battle. Number 024 didn't last long against Aura Bolt. Number 128 was a similar story: Fire Dance to deal with the arms, and then Aura Bolt for the main body. The Cranes were dealt with using (you guessed it) Aura Bolt.

Things are looking pretty good. No party wipes yet. In fact, I don't think I've had to use a single Phoenix Down yet.

^I think THE LIST is more beneficial for people who pull 4 late-game party members, like Kat. You and I have both Locke and Sabin so our early game isn't hard to get our 4 Character Challenge going, but Kat's 4 Character Challenge won't even start until like halfway through the game

Sorry Mog, but Strago's going to want that Gold Hairpin.

Had to play defensively in the Cave to the Sealed Gate, but managed to get through it without too much hassle. Equipping Strago with the Gold Hairpin and a Hero Ring and spamming Aqua Rake made the burning house in Thamasa a cinch. Ultros was a pushover once again.

This game is going by a lot quicker than I expected. I've only been playing about an hour a day, too.

I started this up yesterday. Only got as far as Fígaro, so I’ve barely done anything, but! I’ve started.

As it turns out, the past couple days have been conducive to playing a lot of FFVI. So far it hasn't been too difficult, but I've only got access to one of my four characters and am at the first few build-a-party scenarios. Honestly, though, I don't think Terra should be banned from using magic for flavor reasons. Celes should, though. Since ML posted the full list, here's mine, minus the first four:

Edgar
Mog
Terra
Celes
Relm
Sabin
Locke
Gau
Gogo
Umaro

Unlike Val, I'm probably going to make the effort to rescue Mog since he's high enough in priority that I might need to use him at times.

SORRY

Also, protip...! We do have to pick up Ramuh in Zozo. Even if we can't use him. Spent a good while wandering around waiting for Shadow to leave my party before I realized my mistake. Don't be me, guys!

I've stopped right outside the opera house as I'm all sniffly and out of it.

Got my party of Locke, Sabin and Strago heading into the Floating Continent. Fire Dance is waning in usefulness, but Aura Bolt and Suplex are thankfully not. Sabin also learned Mantra, which is a nice supplement to Strago's healing. Strago is mainly using Pearl Wind (aka White Wind) to heal, and Aqua Rake to attack when he gets the chance. I also picked up Lv. 3 Muddle, Lv. 4 Flare, Lv. 5 Doom, Blowfish, and Condemned for him.

The boss rush before the Floating Continent was easy. Aqua Rake worked wonders on Air Force. The enemies on the Floating Continent kept me on my toes (particularly Behemoths and Dragons), but I had enough HP/MP recovery items to make it all the way through. Atma Weapon was probably the scariest boss fight I've had yet, but with Locke and Sabin attacking and Strago constantly healing, I was able to get through the battle without losing anybody.

I'm in the World of Ruin now. Just picked up Sabin from Tzen. I'm going to try my hardest to only use him until I can my other three party members...
