Well, that does make sense.

The game is out now. The reviews are good... but not great.

Anyone grabbed this yet?

Been playing it for a few hours now. Not far enough to really say too much yet, but from what I've seen so far it's a love it or hate it kind of game. I'm leaning towards the former, fortunately.

All in all it's exactly what they promised, a callback to old platforming collect-a-thons, flaws and all. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to you. Really the only complaint I have so far is that the game holds your hand a little too much. There are times when the game will stop to let the camera fly along the path you're supposed to take to your destination, instead of just letting you figure it out yourself.

Also some people will probably find the character's dumb goofy voices annoying but I can't get enough of them.

I was a little interested, but since the reviews from critics I trust are falling mostly on the "hate it" side and the year is already so crowded, I probably won't end up playing until for a very long time, if at all.

I was interested in playing it. My partner backed it way back when (and for the WiiU), and I was just going to play his (digital) copy. He switched his platform to PS4 when the WiiU version was canceled, but Playtonic sent him a Steam code (and my dinky little seven year old laptop sure isn't going to run it). They're completely ignoring any attempt by him (and lots of others, from what I've seen) to rectify the situation. So, unless that works out or it eventually drops to $15, I won't be playing it.

Not surprised by the reviews.

i feel like i'll probably like this game a lot when i get around to playing it just by virtue of its genre.

i hope the middling reviews don't discourage more exploration-focused 3D platformers from being made, though. it's a genre i sorely need back in my life.

Apparently the character that JonTron is "voicing" is someone on the toilet.

Seems fitting - since **** is usually what comes out of JonTron's mouth.

If by "****" you mean "perfectly valid opinions which are contrary to mine" then yes. That's what people usually mean and I'm not aware of any indefensible positions he's taken so that must be it.

If you guys want to discuss JT, please do so in another thread. The controversy is a month old and YL just came out.

It's tangentially related but I agree.

Who said anything about opinions? I'm talking about Game Grumps! (Then again if you've never seen them, that's probably for the best.)

People have reported that Yooka Laylee has had troubles with consoles. Is this true? Is it also true that they patched the camera?

My initial thought was that it was a DLC, but alas, it's a whole new game in a completely different gameplay genre. It's a sidescroller that looks very reminiscent of the newer Donkey Kong Country games.

Well, color me intrigued. I love a good platformer and I love Yooka and Laylee as characters so I'm pretty much already sold. I'm actually kinda relieved because I thought with the very average reviews the original game got that it might've been the last time we saw these two.

And most importantly, we've still got Grant and David as composers.

There's a FAQ on their website. Notably they aren't billing this as a direct sequel:
Playtonic Games wrote:No, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair isn’t a direct sequel. We’ve got lots planned for the future of the Yooka-Laylee universe, but we want to approach each with a fresh take, as each game is an opportunity for us to add new mechanics and gameplay that isn’t necessarily limited to what’s happened before.
There's gonna be more about the game revealed at E3.
